What is wrong with paramagnons?

چکیده

Systems with itinerant fermions close to a zero temperature quantum phase transition like the high temperature superconductors exhibit unusual nonFermi liquid properties. The interaction of the long-range and low-energy fluctuations of the incipient order with the fermions modify the dynamical properties of the fermions strongly by inducing effective long-range interactions. Close to the transition the interaction of the order parameter fluctuations becomes important. In this paper we discuss the physics of the non-Gaussian order parameter fluctuations on the electronic spectrum and illustrate their effect by considering the charge-density-wave transition and a two dimensional superconductor. Postpartum Haemorrhage: Still a Big Issue in Maternity Care - What is Going Wrong?

Background and aim: Postpartum haemorrhage remains one of the main leading causes of maternal mortality across the world. This is despite a wide-spread coverage of active third stage of labour care in many countries.  Reflecting on emerging evidence in this context, a discussion of associated factors which should be considered in interpretation of the evidence and its implications is presented ...

A Doctor’s First, and Last, Responsibility is to Care Comment on “Denial of Treatment to Obese Patients—the Wrong Policy on Personal Responsibility for Health”

The obesity epidemic raises important and complex issues for clinicians and policy-makers, such as what clinical and public health measures will be most effective and most ethically-sound. While Nir Eyal’s analysis of these issues is very helpful and while he correctly concludes that “conditioning the very aid that patients need in order to become healthier on success in becoming healthier” is ...

Spin fluctuation effect on the electron transport through a quantum point contact

We construct a scattering formalism of electrons passing through a quantum point contact that explains the unusual temperature dependence of the 0.7 anomaly. The existence of pronounced fluctuations (“paramagnons”) induced by the exchange interaction in the region of constriction where the density is low and shortrange interaction is enhanced. The spin related backscattering of the electrons ca...

How to define ‘Moral Realism’

Moral realism is the doctrine that some propositions asserting that some action is ‘morally’ good (obligatory, bad, or wrong) are true. This paper examines three different definitions of what it is for an action to be ‘morally’ good (with corresponding definitions for ‘morally’ obligatory, bad, or wrong) which would make moral realism a clear and plausible view. The first defines ‘morally good ...

Reflections on Jennifer Saul's View of Successful Communication and Conversational Implicature

Saul (2002) criticizes a view on the relationship between speaker meaning and conversational implicatures according to which speaker meaning is exhaustively comprised of what is said and what is implicated. In the course of making her points, she develops a couple of new notions which she calls “utterer-implicature” and “audience-implicature”. She then makes certain claims about the relationshi...
